Lorraine Kelly 'replaced by imposter' on ITV show as she admits 'that's frightening'

AI introduces Lorraine on ITV1

ITV's Lorraine saw a bizarre moment unfold as the show kicked off with viewers observing the presenter apparently introducing herself on screen, only for it to be revealed that her own voice-over was, in fact, a convincing AI imitation.

As the familiar voice said: "Good Morning, I'm Lorraine Kelly and on today's show we're talking about the rise in AI fakes."

Lorraine herself appeared puzzled on screen as she looked around confused.

After the intro, Lorraine promptly cleared up any confusion, admitting: "That wasn't me! That's really frightening that wasn't actually my voice. We've got an AI scam warning in just a moment because they're using our voices."

The programme featured actor James Nesbitt discussing the alarming ease of falling for AI voice scams.

They played a staggering clip where James heard a synthetic version of himself requesting someone's PIN over the phone, reports the Mirror.

He responded in shock: "That's not me! I've never said it"

Audibly shaken as he heard more fake pleas for money in his cloned voice, when the footage concluded, Lorraine said: "James, that's terrifying! That is terrifying because that really did sound like you."

She then underscored the danger of such AI technology, saying: "The way that that is trying to get people's details, their card details and all of that. Scary stuff!"

James expressed his concern about the difficulty in distinguishing reality from fiction in an AI-driven world, highlighting the concerning capabilities of the technology.

He said: "They (AI) can replicate someone's voice from about three seconds of audio, which they can get very easily if someone uploads it online."

In collaboration with Starling Bank, James told Lorraine viewers that they're being encouraged to create a personal safe phrase between loved ones.

The initiative aims to provide people with a tool to verify they are not conversing with a machine, a concept Lorraine praised as an excellent scam prevention measure.

He shared his own unease upon learning about AI's impersonation skills: "To me, I've got a very distinctive voice and it's gone to the core of my career in a way, so when I heard this, which I knew very little about, it's shocking and it's scary."

Lorraine agreed, emphasizing the universal threat posed by such technology.

She said: "It's shocking and it's not just people in the public eye this is happening to.

"This can happen to anybody because we've all left messages and they don't need much of your voice like you said, just snippets."

Lorraine continues weekdays on ITV from 9am.
