The Sims is getting a movie adaptation featuring 'classic' game moments

The Sims 4: EA reveal new 'Strangerville' game

An official The Sims movie adaptation is officially in the works, and it promises to feature some iconic game moments.

Video game makers Electronic Arts have teamed up with Amazon MGM Studios to bring the film to life, with the project formally announced on Tuesday (September 17).

Margot Robbie and her husband Tom Ackerley on board to produce under their LuckyChap Entertainment banner, while Loki and Sex Education director Kate Herron will helm the project.

EA's vice president and general manager of The Sims franchise, Kate Gorman, promised fans a "truly authentic" film. Speaking to Variety, she said: "We wanted the right partners and to make an impact the size of something like a ‘Barbie’ movie is exactly what we want.

"And we know there’s so much love and nostalgia, probably beyond what we would even realize, for ‘The Sims’ and so many people like us have played throughout generations. So we want this to be an experience that reflects all that amazing history and play of so many people in this world, but also is something that you can share across generations and to be part of pop culture and culturally relevant.”

A big question many players have is what really happened to the beloved character of Bella Goth. Gorman has promised there will be a "lot of lore" explored in the film adaptation, so fans could soon get their answer.

Meanwhile iconic game moments like Freezer Bunnies have been confirmed, and there could even be pools without ladders making an appearance on the big screen.

“There will be Freezer Bunnies. I’m sure a pool without a ladder is somewhere in there, but we haven’t finalised any of those details," Gorman added.

"But that’s the idea, is to say that it lives within this space. It’s a nod to all of the amazing play and creation and fun that people have had over the last 25 years within The Sims."

As for whether the Sim's will use their Simlish dialect, she teased; “It’s fun. It’s a great idea, and it’s something we’ll definitely talk about.”

EA Entertainment president Laura Miele told Variety: “Teaming up with renowned Hollywood powerhouses, this exciting new chapter for ‘The Sims’ will bring its magic to millions more fans.

“It’s a testament to the enduring power of this beloved franchise, which has captivated more than 500 million players for a quarter of a century. Our commitment to innovate across ‘The Sims’ universe of experiences and products will inspire all generations of Simmers.”
