Paul Mullin looked as if he considered biting the leg of Birmingham player Alex Cochrane during Wrexham's Monday night League One clash at St Andrew's.

Wrexham had taken the lead in the highly-anticipated clash between the two League One heavyweights, but Birmingham's talent prevailed in the end, with the Blues running out 3-1 winners.

It maintained Birmingham's unbeaten start to the new campaign, as a star-studded audience, including NFL legend Tom Brady, Gary Neville and David Beckham, watched on from the stands.

But the clash wasn't without incident, as the two third-tier sides served up a feisty Monday night encounter.

Birmingham finished the night with 10 men after Polish international and skipper Krystian Bielik saw red for a second bookable offence five minutes from time.

That came after Mullin and Cochrane had been involved in an altercation of their own, with replays appearing to show the former seemingly considering sinking his teeth into the latter's leg before pulling back.

Tensions would once again bubble over moments later, with both sets of players involved in a melee.

Speaking after the game, Cochrane told Sky Sports when asked about the scuffle: "I don't really know to be honest, I was just on the floor. Handbags out of nothing... a load of nonsense really."

Commenting on the incident in the studio, ex-player turned pundit Curtis Davies said: "Yeah, just gave him a kiss on the calf I think... luckily he didn't do it because afterwards they could've banned him.

"But Krystian [Bielik] doesn't need to get involved there, he gets involved and gets overhyped. James McClean gets involved and I think six or seven of them get booked.

"And you just know when this happens, this incident, particularly for Birmingham, not for Wrexham, but it's only going to cost you."

When asked about it post-match, Wrexham gaffer Phil Parkinson issued a similar verdict, telling Sky Sports the coming-together "came out of nowhere".

Despite succumbing to their first league defeat of the season, the Dragons stay top of the League One table as they go in search of a third successive promotion.
