British royal TV blockbuster The Crown aims to reign over Hollywood one last time at Sunday night's glittering Emmy Awards in LA.

The controversial show is set to bow out in style at the annual ceremony with an impressive 18 nominations for its sixth and final season on Netflix.

Dominic West, who portrayed Charles, Prince of Wales, and Imelda Staunton, the latest star to play Queen Elizabeth II, are among the favourites to win their categories as best actor and actress in a drama series.

Jonathan Pryce, who played Prince Philip, is a nominee for best supporting actor while Elizabeth Debicki, who made her debut as tragic Princess Diana and Lesley Manville as Princess Margaret will both battle it out for best supporting actress.

Claire Foy, who played Queen Elizabeth in The Crown's first two seasons, returns as a contender for standout female guest star for her haunting performance as the late monarch's ghost in a season six episode titled Sleep, Dearie Sleep.

Hollywood pundits reckon the show itself whose creator Peter Morgan is also up for another screenwriting award tonight faces fierce opposition in its effort to recapture the best drama series crown it last won in 2021.

Bookies rank it second favourite to land the title behind breakout historical drama Shogun with other strong contenders including HBO's The Gilded Age and Apple TV+ series The Morning Show, starring Jennifer Aniston.

Dominic West faces his own British battle royal to land best drama actor against fellow Brit nominees Idris Elba, for his lead role in the series Hijack, and Gary Oldman, who plays devious spy boss Jackson Lamb in the thriller Slow Horses.

The Crown's production crew and cast are anxious for a majestic exit from the small screen by adding to their phenomenal Emmy haul of 21 wins from 87 nominations over the past five years.

A series insider said: "It was very disappointing to walk away from the BAFTA awards in London earlier this year with nothing to show from eight nominations. We'd love to wind things up in Hollywood with a few more wins."

One of the show's earlier stars, Olivia Colman who played Queen Elizabeth in seasons 3 and 4, winning her first Primetime Emmy in 2021 will reunite with her former cast mates at tonight's ceremony at LA's Peacock Theatre, which will be broadcast live in America on the ABC network.
