Scottie Scheffler has coyly admitted he learnt about his incredible 2024 earnings via the media. The Masters champions remains golf’s man to beat after winning the FedEx Cup, which alone carries a prize of £19million, and retaining top spot in the world rankings.

Scheffler, who is believed to have a net worth of $90million (almost £70million), has banked $62million (£47million) this year alone. That incredible figure was put to him during his appearance on the Pardon My Take show, leaving him looking a little red-faced.

“I did read that, yep, I think so,” he said awkwardly. “I don’t really have much to say on that. It’s been a fun year. I don’t really think about the money very much. I think that becomes a big deal with the FedEx and everything.

“At the end of the day, I’m just playing golf. The money is just a gift on top of that. It’s really all it is.”

Scheffler, who also revealed that players are sent a text at the end of the tournament confirming how much they'd won, then reflected on the first pay-out he received on the PGA Tour which while modest in comparison, was a big deal at the time. He recalled: “I remember playing my first PGA Tour event as a pro. I didn’t play great.

“I finished in maybe 40th place. It was two weeks after graduating from college and I made 30 or 40 grand, something like that.

“You get a text from the tour after each tournament telling you how much money you’ve made. I looked at it and thought, ‘Oh my gosh, that’s how much I got paid? That’s insane’. So it’s pretty fun. I still feel like a kid. I get to go and play golf and have fun.”

Scheffler is set for another big payday when he teams up with Rory McIlroy to face Bryson Dechambeau and Brooks Koepka in a PGA Tour vs LIV Golf match. While there will be no prize money, the quartet will receive handsome appearance fees.

The unique match, which will be held in Las Vegas in December, is another sign of improving relations between the PGA Tour and LIV Golf. The PGA Tour, DP World Tour and Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF) – which bankrolls LIV – have been trying to strike a peace deal since announcing a 'framework agreement' in June last year.
