Kate Garraway delivered an emotional speech as she accepted an award at the National Television Awards for her documentary, Derek's Story. The Good Morning Britain presenter said it was very "bittersweet" to be there without Derek.

Supported by her two children, Darcy and Billy who joined her on the stage, Kate said: "As you can see for my dishevelled appearance, I really, genuinely did not expect this. My goodness me."

She took a deep breath to maintain her emotions as she said: "This is bittersweet because it's very bitter to be here, with gorgeous Darcey and Billy - come forward. I've promised them they don't have to say anything.

"But with heartbreak through the first year of firsts really, first Easter and birthdays, without Derek. It's so strange to be here, at the first Television Awards without him."

She raised her gong to the sky as she said: "This one's for you Derek, absolutely."

Kate secured a hat-trick in the best-authored documentary category of the NTAs after being nominated for the prize again. This time for Kate Garraway: Derek’s Story - which followed the story of her late husband, Derek Draper, and his health battle with long term complications of coronavirus, before he died in January aged 56.

In the category for the award, the ITV presenter was up against shortlisted former England captain David Beckham and pop star Robbie Williams, who both made Netflix documentaries. Rose Ayling-Ellis: Signs for Change and Rhod Gilbert: A Pain in the Neck for SU2C were also nominated.

Kate worried about sharing the news of her award nomination as she candidly admitted that she had faced a large amount of backlash for openly grieving the death of her husband.

On Good Morning Britain, Kate confessed to Lorraine Kelly and her co-host Ed Balls: "I haven't posted I've been nominated yet because I got so much backlash from doing it, for people saying 'stop going on about it'. But actually, I realise I'm letting people down."

She later corrected her ITV team as she said that the award was not for her but for Derek and the carers who looked after him in his final days. Entertainment editor, Richard Arnold, had been discussing the award nominations, before Kate interrupted.

She explained: "When you just said Kate Garraway's nomination, I just want to point out it's not a nomination for me.

"Nobody is voting for me as presenter or anything, it's about Derek's story. I just want people to realise it's on behalf of carers, not me."
