Lee Carsley is planning to sit down with Gareth Southgate and former assistant Steve Holland for talks, as the England interim boss aims to build on a winning start to his reign.

The Football Association appointed Carsley as a temporary successor to Southgate, who stepped down from his role as head coach after nearly eight years in the job.

In his first game in charge, the 50-year-old would have been pleased to see his style of play imprinted on the England squad already after securing a 2-0 win over the Republic of Ireland in Dublin on Saturday.

His first test at Wembley comes against Finland, where he will face the demanding England fanbase for the first time. Once the international break is over, Carsley says he plans to hold talks with Southgate to gauge his opinion - having already picked his brain before his debut in the dugout.

“I heard from him before camp, and I’ll definitely speak to him after camp," Carsley said. "Gareth is really respectful of me having to pick the squad, same with Steve Holland as well.

"I’ll definitely catch up with both of them after camp. I’m not sure what we will talk about, but I’ll definitely get their opinion. I would be interested to see what they thought.

“Gareth and Steve have both got so much experience in football, but in international football. I’ve had one game. So if I can get something off them that is going to help the team and the players, then definitely.”

Carsley will take charge of England for the Nations League games in October and November, but he added that he is "still keeping one eye on the 21s", hinting he may be expecting to return to his previous role.

Southgate went from being a low-key Under-21s manager to a heralded national icon during his eight-year spell as Three Lions boss after guiding England to back-to-back finals at Euro 2020 and Euro 2024.

But Carsley says there is no risk he will get carried away in the England hot seat, opening up with some insight into his 'grounded' approach to life outside of football.

“It’s been fine,” Carsley said of his new-found fame. “I definitely live in the real world. My house is very grounded.

"I think living with a child with special needs, I am well involved in the reality of fundraising and statements and education and making sure he’s getting equal opportunities. And making sure that the group we are involved in, as well as many other groups, we can do as much as we can.

“So, nothing’s changed. It’s the same. Maybe I will have to be a little bit more aware when I am out and about. It’s fair to say I have had a little bit more attention from random people who support teams and shouted ‘make sure you pick so-and-so’ when I get to Starbucks at a services.

“But it’s been very respectful. Anyone I have met has been quite excited by the temporary appointment.”
