ITV fans 'heartbroken' and 'in tears' over 'hard to watch' Post Office scandal documentary
ITV caused an outpouring of emotion this evening as it aired a follow up documentary to their drama series, Mr Bates vs The Post Office, which aired in January.
The show, which will be honoured with a special award at the 2024 National Television Awards next week, brought the story of the faulty Horizon computer and the Royal Mail subpostmasters wrongfully accused of theft to a national audience.
The four-part series followed the story of those impacted by the false allegations due to a faulty computer system, and following its broadcast the government set out to exonerate and compensate those affected. Tonight, ITV aired follow-up Mr Bates vs the Post Office: The Impact, which saw the former subpostmasters and subpostmistresses involved talk about the impact of the scandal.
The documentary saw names familiar to fans of the drama return to the screen. It featured key figures including Jo Hamilton, Jess Uppal and Noel Thomas.
They told viewers how their battle "wasn't over yet" as they were still facing repercussions from the scandal as they continue to fight for justice and to right the wrongs.

The ITV documentary showed footage of Paula Vennells crying at the Inquiry (Image: Getty)Other subpostmasters who were also affected have also come forward in the wake of the drama's success to share their stories, leaving fans heartbroken for them - with some admitting the ITV show was "hard to watch".
Posting to X (formerly Twitter), just minutes after the documentary came on, one user wrote: "Already in tears just watching the first half. The Post Office are so accountable.
"Poor couple had to sell parents home because the Post Office where untouchable. Well tables have turned, Post Office must compensate them for the house and the ruin of lives." They emotionally added: "This is hard to watch."

Another added: "Again, another heartbreaking program from @ITVX on the #postofficescandal following #MrBatesVsThePostOffice."
A third wrote: "The whole #PostOfficeInquiry scandal is so upsetting, just so many lives affected by something absolutely not their fault. It’s heartbreaking. So much trauma for all those poor innocent families #MrBatesVsThePostOffice."
Footage of former chief executive of the Post Office, Paula Vennells, was also shown in the documentary, showing her crying as she gave evidence on the third day of the Inquiry.
At the time, her tears were met with boos from the victims of the scandal, who sat in the public gallery to watch proceedings.
