BBC fans are slamming host Only Connect host Victoria Coren Mitchell for accepting a "wrong answer”.

The Pipe Dreamers took on Too Many Cookes as the latest episode of the popular gameshow went underway, as the teams compete by finding connections between seemingly unrelated clues.

But fans soon became frustrated with host Victoria after she appeared to give out points for two wrong answers before promising to be “lenient” with the other team later to make up for for it.

Fans slammed the star, dubbing her too “lenient”.

function loadOvpScript(){let el=document.createElement('script');el.setAttribute('src','https://live.primis.tech/live/liveView.php?s=118222&playerApiId=v118222');document.getElementById('ovp-primis').appendChild(el)} window.top.addEventListener('primisPlayerInit',e=>{try{if(e.detail&&e.detail.playerApiId==="v118222"){if(window.document.getElementsByClassName('jwplayer')[0]){e.detail.float('disable')}}}catch(e){}});window.addEventListener('DOMContentLoaded',()=>{setTimeout(()=>{if(typeof flagTcfLoaded!=='undefined'&&flagTcfLoaded===!0){loadOvpScript() ExpressApp.Log('[Load] OVP flagTcfLoaded',new Date())}else{document.addEventListener("tcfLoaded",()=>{loadOvpScript() ExpressApp.Log('[Load] OVP tcfLoaded',new Date())})}},1500)})

“She's so lenient this series, accepting wrong answers as being correct,” blasted one fan. Another griped: “#OnlyConnect VCM being very easy with accepting that answer,” and “these answers are so vague sometimes.”

The first controversial answer was “Things for expressions with animals in them”.

Vanessa replied: “Tell me something else.”

Keen to secure a win, the player said: “Two word phrases with animal being the first word.”

“What do you think those clues stand for?” she asked, as they clarified: “Frogmarch and bull or bear market”

Deciding this was good enough, she offered them the point, saying: “In that case I’m going to give you the point because I see where you got confused. A bull market is also known as a bull run.”

She later heard another vague answer, before pulling a face and saying: “I’ll take it, I’ll take it," before turning to the other team and telling them: “I’m going to look for an opportunity to be lenient with you later.”

The question was in relation to films missing ratings - which saw letters removed from the movie titles that would represent a rating. Too Many Cookes answered: “niversity challenge” – removing the N.

“I’d ideally like to have heard a film title like Up," said Vanessa, "but I assume what you were referring to was the film that was made of university challenge which no one’s heard of coz it’s a lesser quiz show."

In January, fans spotted an error in one of the episodes, when the surnames of Stranger Things actors Sadie Sink, Cara Buono, Millie Bobby Brown and Finn Wolfhard’s were displayed.

Wolfhard's name was spelt Wolfhart in the broadcast, and Coren Mitchell responded to fans pointing this out on X, which has been rebranded from Twitter.

She said in a post: "Ooh, it seems we had a spelling mistake on the connecting wall last night! Wolfhard was written as Wolfhart. BUT I WON’T APOLOGIZE. I think it’s important to have an error in the Third Place Play-Off, like the deliberate flaw in a Persian carpet, lest God be offended."

In 2021, Coren Mitchell was asked in an interview with The Guardian to reflect on the show's success, to which she said: "I think there’s a lesson in its surprising popularity. Only Connect isn’t obvious or mainstream; its spirit is Welsh and clever and BBC Four.

"It’s a bit strange, it does its own thing and it’s never consciously tried to be popular. Viewers respond to that – they recognise when they aren’t being patronised. We trust our audience and they trust us."
