BBC PROMS -- An Oasis Prom... definitely, maybe

Could Oasis do a Prom for the BBC next year?

As Last of Night of the Proms fast approaches, two highly influential Proms broadcasters, Georgia Mann, and Petroc Trelawny, who present the final evening for Radio 3 listeners, think it has potential.

“It would be quite a coup,” said Petroc, “Oasis with the BBC Symphony Orchestra… but we could only charge £8 for a standing ticket –

“No dynamic pricing here!” adds Georgia.

The Proms have already been breaking new ground.

This year has seen performances from popular artists such as Sam Smith and Florence Welch.

Said Petroc: “I think Liam and Noel might say no, but if they want to do it for the world’s greatest classical music festival I’m sure it could be possible.

“It would be great to hear Wonderwall. Iain Farrington [arranger] could orchestrate it for the BBC Symphony Orchestra. Amazing.”

While we might hear Wonderwall next season, Rule Britannia’s future “ruling the waves” in the Last Night’s traditional line-up looks increasingly under threat from top BBC bosses.

The BBC is said to be planning to commission new works for the Last Night line-up.

Asked if the song was now too patriotic, Georgia Mann replied: “Opinions are undeniably divided over it. We know that, and the people making the decisions at the top of the organisation [BBC] are, of course, aware of that.

“I think that it's great that people care so deeply about it, and I think that we need to be there to reflect that. We need to be talking about it. And I think that matters. As Petroc says, it is happening this year [Rule Britannia], but we don't know what next year brings.

“We have to just make sure that we as an organisation are remaining open to this thing evolving exactly as you've just described that it has done over the years.”

Petroc explains that there is an international dimension, with the song broadcast globally.

“The point is that it is this international thing that happens to have for what, three minutes, one tune that means different things to different people.

"And I think, you know, of course, we're sensitive to people's feelings about it, either way. That said, the Proms are ever-evolving.”

Two, “high-calibre” soloists -- soprano Angel Blue and pianist Sir Stephen Hough -- are performing on the Last Night.

Said Petroc: “Angel Blue and I presented, I suppose, 15 years ago, the Cardiff Singer of the World together, when she was really starting out as a singer. She's now a superstar, singing at the Royal Opera House. She's just been a brilliant Tosca there. She is a great soprano, and she's a glorious person.

“Stephen Hough is a great artist, too, a great thinker, but also, you know, someone who is an incredibly cerebral, serious pianist, but also loves nothing better than letting his hair down. So he is a perfect booking.”

The popular Radio 3 double act sign off each Proms year in a novel way -- a small party, offering negroni cocktails in plastic cups, and pork pies.

Sadi Georgia: “You have to experience them together. It’s a weirdly good mix!”
