ITV Good Morning Britain's Kate Garraway halts show to issue nomination announcement

Good Morning Britain: Kate Garraway addresses NTA nomination

Kate Garraway interrupted today's episode of Good Morning Britain to give an update on her NTA nomination. Earlier this year she starred in a documentary about her late husband's battle with long covid - Derek's Story.

Derek, who sadly succumbed to coronavirus complications, passed away in January 2024, nearly four years after falling ill. In the wake of his death, Kate took a break from the public eye to mourn with family before returning to Good Morning Britain.

Today she made an announcement about her nomination, clarifying it wasn't about her. Instead it was focused on her late husband and the carers who looked after him before his passing.

The ITV show's entertainment editor, Richard Arnold, had been discussing the award nominations, before Kate interrupted to correct him. She explained: "When you just said Kate Garraway's nomination, I just want to point out it's not a nomination for me.

"Nobody is voting for me as presenter or anything, it's about Derek's story. I just want people to realise it's on behalf of carers, not me."

Fellow co-host Robert Rinder showed his support for Kate as he admitted he had already voted, saying: "I've already voted, it's a beautiful programme. It deserves all of the votes."

Yesterday, the 57-year-old presenter shared her heartache over the decision not to post about her documentary Derek's Story as she admitted that she had received severe backlash online.

Kate confessed to Lorraine Kelly and her co-host Ed Balls: "I haven't posted I've been nominated yet because I got so much backlash from doing it, for people saying 'stop going on about it'. But actually, I realise I'm letting people down."

She emotionally recalled Derek's feelings of helplessness during his illness: "One of the biggest frustrations was that he felt like a total failure, he felt like an incredible burden on the carers, on the system, on us and it didn't matter what we said, he felt that burden, and he wanted to be a contributor."

She added: "It's wonderful to have the chance to honour him and also honour the millions.

"I'm sad because I don't have the chance to care anymore but I felt it would be wrong for me to sort of walk away from the caring campaign that I feel I have a responsibility for."
