Bargain Hunt: Red Team make a loss on expert's buy

Bargain Hunt mother and daughter duo were left reeling after an expert offered up a challenge item that caused their profit margins to massively slip on the show.

The BBC programme aired on Thursday, September 5 the usual teams were ready to race across the flea markets in hope of nabbing the best steal to flog at auction. In usual fashion, we were introduced to the red team that included mum, Trudi and her daughter Anna.

From the get-go the ladies seemed to be good sports, offering up a few quips as they explained who would be taking charge of the £300 spending money. Anna joked: "You're the mother, so you're in charge."

In every episode, antiques experts are allocated to teams, today, Phil Serrell was on-hand to help with Trudi and Anna's shopping needs. We then met the blue team, who were husband and wife Mick and Marian, who were given Roo Irvine, she stepped in as their handy guru to offer up expertise.

Both teams were off to a blinding start, with the blue team capturing their first buy just 10 minutes into the show. They stumbled across two identical greyhound statues that fitted well for their challenge item.

At the start of the programme, host Charlie Ross tasked the teams with finding one item that "could be used in a garden". It was Marian who spied the statues and with the assistance of Roo, managed to haggle and nab two for just £75.

For the reds, it was a bit of a slow burn but they did finally spy a lawn edger that took their fancy. Phil took care of the negotiations, swooping in to offer £30 for it which was quickly accepted by the sales person

There was no stopping Trudi and Anna from this point on, they went on to purchase two green log bins for £75 and a Grecian-style urn for £90. Despite their immense efforts the auctioneer wasn't overly enthused by anything they'd placed before him.

He told host Charlie: "I'll have to do my work to get them out of trouble." However, the auctioneer couldn't have been more wrong, with all of their items making more money than they'd actually spent.

Trudi and Anna seemed quite pleased that despite the odds they'd managed to rack up a tidy £67 profit in the end. However, it was crunch time, they were offered the expert's item for the day - which was a Buddah statue, with Charlie paying £40 for it.

Unsure on whether to take the gamble and see if they could boost their profit, they began to discuss the item Charlie had offered. Anna was confident they could make an extra £10 on it but mum Trudi felt they might break even.

But in the end, convinced they wouldn't lose anything and trusting Charlie's judgement they decided to take a punt and place it in the running at auction. Much to everyone's surprise, the Buddha failed to impress anyone online or present in the room.

It was a struggle for the auctioneer to get any take up at all and so the item as Trudi and Anna furiously shook their heads when the stone ornament was flogged for just £28 which was £12 short of what they'd spent on it.

The twosome didn't say much but seemed very unimpressed as they waved their arms in the air saying "nevermind" that they were now down to £55 profit after the sale of the Buddah.

The game was now very much in the blue team's hands. Much like the red team, they also found much success with all of their items at auction too. They ended up finishing up with a staggering £105 profit, piping Trudi and Anna to the podium.
