Epic Mel Gibson film set to hit BBC 29 years after it was first released

On The Line: Mel Gibson stars in trailer

Action movie fans are in for a treat as an epic Mel Gibson film has come out on the BBC, 29 years following its initial debut.

As well as an abundance of new shows and films making their way to the BBC over the next few months, including Nightsleeper and the next Strictly Come Dancing series, the channel also drops old fan-favourites.

One of its latest additions is a Mel Gibson classic in the shape of the 1995 epic Braveheart with the actor portraying Scottish knight William Wallace.

Set in the 13th Century during the Scottish Wars of Independence, rebel William Wallace (played by Mel Gibson) and his clan, set out to battle King Edward I of England after killing his bride a day after their wedding.

While William Wallace was a real-life person, the film is reportedly full of historical inaccuracies, having been inspired by a 12,000 poem by Scottish poet Blind Harry.

Despite not being entirely accurate, this didn’t stop Braveheart going on to win a number of Oscars in 1996.

From best director and original score, to best screenplay and the biggest award of the night, best picture, Braveheart has certainly gone down in movie history.

Gibson is joined by a number of other big names in the film as well, including Succession’s Brian Cox, The Land Girl’s Catherine McCormack, Columbo’s Patrick McGoohan and Equilibrium’s Angus McFayden.

But not everyone in the Braveheart cast was a big fan of the movie thanks to its historical inaccuracies.

Actor Brian Cox previously told The Standard: “Braveheart is a load of nonsense.

“Mel Gibson was wonderful but it’s a load of lies. He never impregnated the French princess. It is b******s, that film.”

Nevertheless, Braveheart has stood the test of time and is still deemed a classic for many.

Some of Gibson’s other works include Hacksaw Ridge, The Patriot, Signs, Conspiracy Theory and Mad Max.

Braveheart is available to watch on BBC iPlayer.
