Riverdale star Camila Mendes was initially set to feature in the reboot of the 90s classic, I Know What You Did Last Summer. However, reports suggest she has stepped down from the project due to scheduling clashes with her role as Teela in Amazon MGM Studios and Mattel Films' Masters of the Universe, according to Deadline.

Despite Mendes' reported departure, the film still boasts a stellar cast including Outer Banks star Madelyn Cline, Sarah Pidgeon, Tyriq Withers and Jonah Hauer-King, all set to appear in the Sony-backed film.

Jennifer Katyin Robinson, known for her work on Do Revenge, is directing the project and co-writing the screenplay with Sam Lansky.

Neal H. Moritz, who co-produced the first two films and 2006's I'll Always Know What You Did Last Summer, is expected to produce the project.

The original 1997 film told the spine-chilling story of a group of teenagers who accidentally kill a man on their graduation night and find themselves being stalked by a hook-wielding killer a year later, reports the Mirror.

The 90s hit featured a star-studded cast including Jennifer Love Hewitt, Freddie Prinze Jr, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Johnny Galecki, Ryan Phillippe and Bridgette Wilson Sampras.

Prinze and Hewitt reprised their roles in the 1998 sequel I Still Know What You Did Last Summer, while the 2006 follow-up I'll Always Know What You Did Last Summer introduced an entirely new cast.

The popularity of the horror franchise even led to a 2021 Amazon Prime Video series, also titled I Know What You Did Last Summer, which garnered mixed reviews and an average audience score of just 35 percent on Rotten Tomatoes.

Some fans lauded the series for its contemporary interpretation of the story, weaving social media into the plot.

The initial film was a box office success, raking in $125.3 million globally on a budget of $17 million, securing the number one spot at the box office for three consecutive weeks.

Sony Pictures' forthcoming reboot is anticipated to feature a mix of original and new cast members.

In February 2023, rumours emerged that original stars Jennifer and Freddie were being considered for roles in the reboot.

The reboot is set to release on July 18 2025.
