Martin Zubimendi declared "it is my life" and expressed his contentment at Real Sociedad, revealing he felt "no pressure" from his close ones after turning down a move to Liverpool. The Reds had their sights set on the Spanish midfielder, ready to activate a £51million release clause last month.

Liverpool's sporting director Richard Hughes was under the impression that Zubimendi was Anfield-bound, but the lifelong Sociedad supporter chose to stay with the club that nurtured his international career.

It is believed that Real Sociedad's persuasive efforts played a significant role in convincing Zubimendi to commit to them for the season ahead, leaving Liverpool to concede and abandon the pursuit in August.

In an interview with Marca during his time with Spain's national team, Zubimendi mentioned that neither family nor friends urged him to remain in San Sebastian, yet he reaffirmed his devotion to the club he's been with since 2011.

"No, no, my friends are clear that whatever I decide [for my future] will be the best," Zubimendi said. "There is no pressure whatsoever.

"Real Sociedad for me is my life, I think I have spent half my life there. A lot of what I am is part of la Real, it is my life.

"[Our goal to qualify for] Europe is clear. The higher the position, the better. We have to look for our best version and, above all, compete. To feel competitive, to be recognised and to be seen with personality."

Liverpool decided against chasing another target after their move for Zubimendi fell through, only bringing in Italian striker Federico Chiesa during the summer transfer period. Meanwhile, they've secured a deal for Valencia's goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili, who will make the switch next year for a fee of £29m.
