Gavin and Stacey final episode plot teased as James Corden gives update

James Corden chats to BBC Breakfast at Gavin and Stacey filming

James Corden met with fans as the filming for a final episode of Gavin and Stacey got underway.

Both James and his co-creator Ruth Jones - who play Smithy and Nessa - will return for a final Christmas special of the BBC show, with filming now underway on Barry Island ahead of the last ever episode.

James was seen directing the scenes, which saw Nessa on a rickshaw with Joanna Page's character Stacey as a passenger. Fans of the show lined the cordon to see the scenes being filmed as they eagerly await the final ever episode to air later this year - but for now, the exact plot of the Christmas special is being kept underwraps.

BBC Breakfast was on hand to capture some of the filming, with their reporter chatting to James. Asked if he was suspecting a turn out like that, he admitted: "Not really. It's lovely, it's all very overwhelming," as fans rushed to have their photo with him. He later added: "It'll likely be the last time we'll be here. All of it, it's wonderful."

Gavin and Stacey is a British classic, with fans so excited when they found out the show would be back for one more episode. At the end of the previous Christmas special, Nessa proposed to Smithy but we didn't see how it all ended - until now!

Just 17 weeks ago, James and Ruth had fans stunned when they announced the show would be coming back for a one-off Christmas special. Posing with a script, they wrote on Instagram: "Some news… It’s official!!! We have finished writing the last ever episode of Gavin and Stacey. See you on Christmas Day, BBC One. Love Ruth and James."

The pair had both been busy with other work commitments but back in July, James confirmed they were days away from finishing the script. He said two months ago: "It's quite tough because [we're both in theatre shows]. So we've been doing quite a bit of writing in dressing rooms and things like that. And then both looking at each other being quite tired from the plays but we'll be back at it tomorrow. Back at it Friday. I hope by Friday… it will be done and finished this Friday."

In a later interview, James confirmed they had finished the script and celebrated with a glass of champagne.

"We finished it yesterday. They chose not to see my play [the Constituent] because they wanted something that was perhaps a bit more uplifting. So I then went to meet them in Ruth's dressing room and we all had a glass of champagne and then they had to get the train, and Ruth and I walked back to her place, and we just sat and we had a drink," he said.

"We actually sent the cast a photo on our little chat group saying 'we've finished our shows and we finished the rewrites and a script will be winding its way to you guys'. It'll be going ... I guess they'll get the script, I guess, in the next few days."
