'More promotion needed to boost para sports growth'

The Sports Association for the Physically Disabled of Hong Kong, China said on Tuesday that more promotion of para sports is needed to attract a new generation of para athletes. The association’s chairman, John Leung, applauded the SAR delegation for their speculator performance in the Paris Paralympics. Team Hong Kong has won six medals so far, including two golds, three silvers and a bronze. He said Hong Kong has produced many top-ranking para athletes, and he hopes more will continue to join. "The number of our disabled students and the disabled youth are decreasing. And therefore, we have to work harder to attract more students from the special school, from the disabled school, to encourage them to participate more in the disabled sports," he said. "[We are] hoping [they will move up]… to the Tier B level, and eventually, they go to the elite." Leung also said he hopes more resources can be allocated in this area, and that more people in Hong Kong will support and pay attention to para sports in the SAR.
