Netflix show 'one of the best in history' as fans claim it's 'better than Game of Thrones'

The Last Kingdom season 5 trailer from Netflix

One Netflix series has been hailed as potentially "one of the best series in history", rivalling the epic Game of Thrones, which left fans yearning for more after its 2019 finale.

Devotees of the legendary fantasy saga have been divided; while many flocked to HBO's prequel House of the Dragon, some assert they've discovered a gem on Netflix that perfectly fills the void.

The Last Kingdom, a gripping British historical drama that first hit screens in 2015, is based on Bernard Cornwell's acclaimed The Saxon Stories novels.

According to its IMDb description: "As Alfred the Great defends his kingdom from Norse invaders, Uhtred - born a Saxon but raised by Vikings - seeks to claim his ancestral birthright."

Originally airing on BBC Two, The Last Kingdom was snapped up by Netflix in 2018 after a joint production effort, reports the Mirror.

Spanning 46 episodes, the series wrapped up in 2022, with Netflix delivering a cinematic swansong, Seven Kings Must Die, to cap off the tale in 2023.

Set in the turbulent 9th century Anglo-Saxon England, The Last Kingdom chronicles the fierce resistance against Danish Viking incursions.

The cast boasts talent such as Ewan Mitchell and Phia Saban, both of whom star in House of the Dragon, alongside Alexander Draymon, Arnas Fedaravicius, Emily Cox, and Eliza Butterworth.

Fans have previously taken to X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter, to express their adoration for the show.

"This season has been really moving and for me, it is one of the best series in history. Masterpiece 10/10."

"The Last Kingdom is my favourite Netflix show. Its series finale far surpassed Game of Thrones finale!" exclaimed a second fan.

Another concurred: "Recently finished watching The Last Kingdom. This show seriously doesn't get enough attention.

"It's one of the most consistently well-written shows I've seen, even with the low budget of S1 does the writing shine, and continues to improve over time. Highly recommended." (sic)

Yet another fan argued fervently: "Well better than Game Of Thrones. Don't think there is a bad episode let alone a bad season." (sic)

The Last Kingdom is available to stream on Netflix.

Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon can be streamed via SKY or NOW TV.
