The Chase sensation Darragh Ennis has confidently dismissed the notion of AI usurping his role on the hit quiz show. The brainy 43 year old, known as The Menace on ITV's popular programme, believes that no technology will ever be "powerful" enough to replace him.

Speaking to the Daily Star Sunday, he expressed his intrigue with AI but shrugged off any threat it poses: "Artificial intelligence is totally fascinating, but I don't worry about it replacing us on The Chase."

Ennis further elaborated on the common misconceptions about AI's capabilities: "So the thing about AI that everybody seems to misconstrue is they think it's more powerful than it is. That's one of the things."

He also humorously noted that replicating his fellow Chaser Mark Labbett, aka The Beast, would be impractical: "I don't think you could replace The Beast though - the projector for that hologram would be massive. There's no way to replace him."

function loadOvpScript(){let el=document.createElement('script');el.setAttribute('src','https://live.primis.tech/live/liveView.php?s=114945&playerApiId=v114945');document.getElementById('ovp-primis').appendChild(el)} window.top.addEventListener('primisPlayerInit',e=>{try{if(e.detail&&e.detail.playerApiId==="v114945"){if(window.document.getElementsByClassName('jwplayer')[0]){e.detail.float('disable')}}}catch(e){}});window.addEventListener('DOMContentLoaded',()=>{setTimeout(()=>{if(typeof flagTcfLoaded!=='undefined'&&flagTcfLoaded===!0){loadOvpScript() ExpressApp.Log('[Load] OVP flagTcfLoaded',new Date())}else{document.addEventListener("tcfLoaded",()=>{loadOvpScript() ExpressApp.Log('[Load] OVP tcfLoaded',new Date())})}},1500)})

However, Ennis isn't entirely opposed to AI; he sees potential benefits in supporting the unsung heroes of the showthe question writers. He acknowledged their hard work and the challenges they face with public scrutiny: "Do you know what, I wouldn't be against the idea of our question-writing team, who are the least appreciated people in the world by the way, using it."

He sympathised with their plight, noting how they often receive complaints about the questions – a typical quirk of quiz shows.

The scientist-turned-quizmaster suggested that AI could serve as a tool to assist in crafting questions, thereby easing the burden on the question writers: "But I'd have no problem if they wanted to use AI to generate a starting point for questions, why not?" He pointed out that while AI-generated content would still require verification and fact-checking, it could significantly reduce their workload and introduce new topics by tapping into vast information resources.

Ennis also highlighted an intriguing advantage of AIits ability to eliminate human biases in question selection: "And also, one good thing about AI is, everybody has biases and you could change the biases to that of the machine."

This, he suggests, could diversify the range of subjects covered on 'The Chase', ensuring a broader spectrum of knowledge is tested.

The Chase airs weekdays at 5pm on ITV1.
