Alan Shearer slams Newcastle transfer window and Saudi owners in seven-word fume

Alan Shearer has fumed that the Newcastle hierarchy has “failed” Eddie Howe after accusing the club of not making the necessary additions in the summer transfer window.

The Magpies sought a new centre-back and right-winger on deadline day, but failed to get either across the line as efforts to sign Crystal Palace’s Marc Guehi and Nottingham Forest forward Anthony Elanga were both rebuffed.

Hampered by the Premier League’s profit and sustainability regulations (PSR) this summer, Newcastle were forced to sell promising youngster Yankuba Minteh to Brighton and Elliott Anderson followed out the door to Forest.

The club even considered selling star man Anthony Gordon to Liverpool, with Howe forced to be content with the additions of Lewis Hall, Odysseas Vlachodimos, William Osula, Lloyd Kelly and John Ruddy this summer.

And Shearer has fumed at the decision-makers for not making big improvements to the squad. Just 12 minutes after the window closed, the Match of the Day pundit took to X (formerly known as Twitter) and wrote: “They haven’t helped Eddie at all. Failed him.”

Shearer was far from the only Newcastle figure dismayed by the lack of spending by their Saudi Arabian ownership group. On deadline day, Howe hit out at PSR and admitted it had been a far-from-ideal window.

“I'm not going to sit here and say this has been a brilliant transfer window for us,” he said. “When we start out and go into the window, you know there's various parts of the squad that needed looking at, work and needed to improve.

“It's the same wish for everyone working inside Newcastle, we've got to find the right solutions but they've got to be the right solutions. The worst thing we could do is bring in the wrong players, the wrong players could harm us for the future.

“This window continues to be difficult for us. It’s a difficult situation with PSR and attracting the right players we think can make a difference. If we can’t do that, then doing nothing is perhaps the best option, as frustrating as that is. There is a feeling that we have a good squad, but a feeling there are a few areas we felt we needed to strengthen.”

Despite picking up four points from their opening two Premier League games, and getting through in the Carabao Cup against Forest, the Magpies’ performances have underwhelmed - further upping the pressure on Howe and those above him.

Newcastle will be determined to get back into Europe for next season, but Shearer has led fears that their inactivity in the transfer window may cost them in their pursuit.
