Vera fans 'expose' Brenda Blethyn's heartbreaking exit after spotting clue

BBC Breakfast: Ann Cleeves talks about Vera tv adaptation

Vera fans think they have worked out how the upcoming series will end - and it won't end for the show's leading lady Brenda Blethyn, who plays DCI Stanhope. Earlier this year, Brenda confirmed she would be hanging up her hat and coat and that the upcoming series would be her final one.

However, while ITV bosses and the cast are keeping tight-lipped about how the final series will play out, it hasn't stopped hardcore fans coming up with their own predictions. And while many are hoping for a happy ending for DCI Stanhope, others think she could end up getting killed off or that her health could take a turn.

Brenda has played the iconic detective since 2011, and during that time, fans will know DCI Stanhope has suffered with her health and that she has angina. Could Vera's health take a dramatic turn in the final series and will that be how she bows out of the drama?

Fans have taken to a Facebook fan page dedicated to Vera to share their own thoughts and theories, with one suggesting DCI Stanhope's exit will be due to her health.

One theorised: "I wonder if they will kill her off cos she's got angina," (sic) while another replied: "Hope not though..."

Someone else penned: "Hoping that it will be a great ending and she isn't killed off."

"I agree, should show her retiring and off to a world on holiday...something not final."

Another pleaded: "I hope she retires, I really hope they don't kill her off, that won't be right."

"It has to be a positive ending, killing her off would be so wrong," one agreed.

A seventh echoed the same sentiment: "Please don't kill poor Vera."

Despite writing the books, Vera writer Ann Cleeves admitted she has no idea how the series will end in a recent interview on BBC Breakfast.

When asked by Naga Munchetty about whether she likes the adaptation of the ITV series, Ann simply replied: "I do yeah, I think they capture the essence of the books and the atmosphere of the place, and that's far more important than details of the plot."

Naga was taken aback as she asked: "Really? It is more important than the plot?" before asking her about how the final series will wrap up. "Is it unusual that you don't know how this 10th series is going to end?"

"I guess, but I don't want to know," the author admitted. "I want to be there on a Sunday night with my glass of wine, watching and working out what they're going to do with it."

Vera returns to ITV in 2025.
