Coronation Street star quits soap after eight years and is 'definitely not going back'

Bethany Platt asks for help escaping from Nathan in Corrie

A Coronation Street star has confirmed they have left the ITV soap, admitting they are “definitely not coming back”.

Actor Christopher Harper shot to fame playing Nathan Curtis on the cobbles. Making his debut in 2016, Nathan went on to become one of the soap’s most memorable and evil villains.

Nathan was first introduced as the ex-boyfriend of Shona (Julia Goulding) He then befriended Bethany Platt (Lucy Fallon) before abusing and grooming her.

In one of the soap’s most harrowing scenes, the sick paedo forced her to sleep with other men. But when Bethany opened up about the ordeal, Nathan was jailed for his crimes.

However, the character made his return a few months ago - amid the missing Lauren Bolton (Cait Fitton) storyline. Lauren went missing earlier this year - and Nathan ended up becoming a prime suspect.

What’s more, bent copper Kit Green (Jacob Roberts) then planted Lauren’s DNA in his Dan, framing Nathan for Lauren’s murder which ended with him getting arrested and put back behind bars.

Meanwhile, the actual culprit Joel Deering (Calum Lill) appeared to have gotten away with it - until recent weeks.

However, it seems Nathan’s reign of terror is finally coming to an end, as actor Chris has confirmed he is “definitely not going back.”

Speaking to Digital Spy, he said: “Coronation Street is not a place for the journey of a paedophile to recover and become loved.

“That’s not a thing you should be doing on a soap. And so, I was absolutely adamant that if Nathan ever came back, then he mustn’t be forgiven. But I did also know that it was about time he would be coming out [of prison], so I did wonder.”

Confirming his exit, Chris added: “I’m definitely not going back, but never say never, I suppose! I genuinely do not want him to have a forgiveness arc. So, I don’t know why he’d keep coming back to Weatherfield.

“It’s Bethany’s journey, not his. It’s got to be about Bethany’s life, and I think he’s done his time.”

Coronation Street airs Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 8pm on ITV1 and ITVX
