ITV Lorraine star left feeling 'shameful' as Ranvir Singh probes on shoplifting past

Lorraine: Shappi talks to Ranvir about shameful shoplifting past

The atmosphere on ITV's Lorraine grew tense as Ranvir Singh delved into the shoplifting history of her guest, leaving Shappi Khorsandi squirming with discomfort.

Shappi Khorsandi graced Thursday's episode of Lorraine to promote her new book Scatter Brain, which chronicles her life and the revelation of an ADHD diagnosis in adulthood that turned her world on its head.

During her youth and early 20s, Shappi confessed to actions she now regrets, attributing them to a mind that was constantly wild and buzzing, leading to feelings that were "emotionally overwhelming".

It was in her 40s that Shappi began to suspect an underlying health issue and considered the possibility that she might be among the many who were misdiagnosed with ADHD in their childhood.

Her memoir reveals a frank account of her compulsion for shoplifting, detailing the irresistible impulses to take items that weren't hers, reports the Mirror.

Ranvir initiated the discussion with: "You also then started stealing, even though you are incredibly polite, you then started stealing and it got progressively... you were not just stealing little from friends here and there... 50p here, a crayon there.."

"Oh this is really shameful," Shappi gasped, before admitting: "I know it's in the book but that's giving me a shame attack. I talk about that in the book because ADHD is a dopamine deficiency and so quick hits like any addiction."

She went on to reveal: "Like when I was kid I didn't have access to alcohol and drugs so shoplifting gave me a dopamine hit."

The celebrity shared insights into how the diagnosis of ADHD revolutionised her life. Speaking candidly to Ranvir, she expressed: "I don't have emotional meltdowns anymore. I feel like I was emotionally attacking and inappropriately because I was overloaded."

The writer continued: "I don't shout anymore. You can ask my kids, I never shout and I'm much more calm than I have ever been."

Confronting the issue of medication, Ranvir asked, "You are on medication though aren't you? " to which Shappi acknowledged, "I am but I am very clear in the book that is not the be-all and end-all."

The segment then shifted as Ranvir introduced Dr Amir Khan to look at additional strategies and therapies for those battling similar issues, with Dr Khan highlighting options like physiotherapy and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy.

For fans of Ranvir Singh's work on Good Morning Britain as a political correspondent, she has held the fort for beloved Scottish presenter Lorraine Kelly, who has been away. As the summer draws to a close, viewers eager for Lorraine's return might see her back on their screens as early as the upcoming week.

Lorraine airs weekdays on ITV1, from 9am.
