Gary Lineker fumes at 'odd bloke' Elon Musk as he claims he's made his life 'unpleasant'

GMB: Piers Morgan has Twitter spat with Gary Lineker live on air

Match of the Day presenter Gary Lineker has confessed he is no longer a fan of X, formerly known as Twitter, due to the changes Elon Musk has made to the platform since taking over.

Describing it as “very unpleasant now” he said it was no longer a "pleasurable experience" to post his thoughts.

“I don’t really post my thoughts now because I think it has become not a very pleasurable experience. There was a time you could have little chats with people on there and a bit of banter.

"Now it is impossible because before I could have chats with people I either followed or were blue-tick people but now everyone’s got a blue tick so that doesn’t work anymore,"the 63-year-old said in an interview with The Independent.

“I have become a bit bored with it. It is a very unpleasant world there and Musk is clearly a very odd bloke,” he added.

Elon Musk purchased Twitter in October 2022, months after backing away from the deal. Writing about the deal on his Twitter page for his 107.9 million followers, he laid out plans the platform would eventually factor into an "everything app".

"Buying Twitter is an accelerant to creating X, the everything app," he wrote. He argued the site would help accelerate his new app proposal "by three to five years".

Historically Gary has ruffled feathers with his posts on the platform. Despite presenting Match of the Day for 25 years his role was threatened after he used X to criticise the UK government's asylum policy in November 2023.

His posts were denounced by the former Home Secretary Suella Braverman, which prompted the BBC to subsequently announce the former England forward was temporarily axed.

Gary was removed from his presenting role on Match of the Day as they deemed “his recent social media activity to be a breach of our guidelines.”

As a result, a number of his colleagues also stepped down from their respective roles on BBC shows as a sign of solidarity.

In an unprecedented turn of events, Match of the Day was then broadcast without any commentary or analysis, and the BBC quickly reversed their decision, reinstating Lineker.

The corporation then promptly declared a review of its social media policies and procedures.
