Sherwood star says 'it hurt' he wasn't cast in season 1 as he shares 'personal' link

Robert Lindsay talks about 'deep connection' with Sherwood

Sherwood has returned to BBC One for a second outing and the series introduced British actor Robert Lindsay as Franklin Warner. The My Family star featured on BBC Breakfast on Monday to discuss his role and how desperate he was to be part of the series.

When asked why he wanted to be in the show so badly he told the show's hosts: "I was desperate to be in series one, I can't tell you. I hadn't seen it when it was shown, when I was invited to lunch by James Graham, the writer, and he offered me a role in the second series I binge-watched the first one.

"It blew my mind. And actually it hurt, because I thought, you know, I'm from Nottingham, and I went through that whole thing, you know, that was going on in Nottingham at the time.

"So it was very personal to me. Unfortunately there wasn't a role in there and it had already been cast. But now I'm in the second series and there's a long story attached to it.

"But I was very motivated by the political implications of what was going on in Nottingham at the time."

The actor's character has shades of the late David Hart as quoted by The Guardian, a highly controversial adviser to Margaret Thatcher who raised money for the miners in an effort to break the strike.

He added on BBC Breakfast: "My father was a trade unionist, I got very involved with the miners."

He recalled a time he was staying with his parents and took them out for lunch and "within seconds there was this huge fight between fathers and sons".

He added: "I said to my dad 'what's all this about?' and he said 'It's beginning'."

Sherwood season two explores the powerful themes that made the first so resonant to audiences across the UK, according to the show's synopsis.
