'Drive to fix poor housing causing homelessness fears'

A community activist group on Sunday called on the government to make sure subdivided flat tenants find housing elsewhere if they are evicted because their homes fail to meet minimum living standards. The call came after a government task force submitted suggestions on minimum living standards to Chief Executive John Lee on Thursday. Speaking to RTHK, deputy director of the Society for Community Organization Sze Lai-shan said the group welcomes any measures to improve people's quality of living. However, she warned that people living in subdivided housing might have to relocate if new rules are brought in. "Actually, everyone wants to solve this problem. But they think about if they have this kind of standard, so some of them, they will be closed or they need to move out and then they need to modify it or renovate it," she explained. "They are afraid they will be homeless." As well as calling for the government to ensure such residents find new homes, Sze also said the city's public housing supply should be increased to alleviate the housing shortage.
