Newcastle 'make progress' in Marc Guehi transfer and announcement timeline emerges

Newcastle are making solid progress in talks with Crystal Palace over a potential move for Marc Guehi, according to reports. The Magpies have been chasing a move for Guehi all summer, with Palace having rejected multiple bids in the hope of keeping their star man.

It was reported earlier this week that Newcastle had switched their focus to alternative targets after being knocked back in their efforts to land Guehi. However, it seems a move for the 24-year-old is firmly on the cards and could be completed within the next few days.

Newcastle are 'edging closer' to agreeing terms with Palace and have high hopes of a deal being done by the end of the week, according to Sky Sports. It is said that a package of around £65million plus add-ons is likely to be enough to push the move over the line.

The report adds that while Palace would prefer to keep Guehi, they have reluctantly accepted that it would make sense to cash in while his value is high. Talks are now believed to be at an advanced stage with Newcastle having made a breakthrough in the last 24 hours.

Newcastle could still decide to pursue a handful of other defensive targets in the event their move for Guehi falls flat. The likes of Edmond Tapsoba and Axel Disasi have been linked with the Magpies over the last few days, but neither player is said to be close to joining the club.

It remains to be seen if Newcastle will be able to wrap up a deal with Palace ahead of Sunday's away trip to Bournemouth. Guehi will be eligible to make his debut at the Vitality Stadium if the relevant paperwork is completed before midday on Saturday.

Newcastle's need to sign a centre-back intensified following Fabian Schar's red card against Southampton in their Premier League opener. The Swiss defender was sent off for a headbutt on Ben Brereton Diaz and is facing a three-match suspension, meaning he will be unavailable to face Bournemouth.

Eddie Howe was quizzed on his side's pursuit of Guehi last weekend and suggested the move would only go ahead if it was the right deal for the club. He said: "Of course, we're looking in the transfer market, we've got a period of time left and we'll see what we can do.

"I think the conditions have to be right for us. Like I said on Friday, we can't do something that goes against the longer-term good of the football club. So, we'll try and make the right decision."
