GMB's Kate Garraway makes heartbreaking admission about her future after Derek's death

Paddy McGuinness quizzed on 'growing old' by Kate Garraway

Kate Garraway opened up about her thoughts on retirement during Wednesday's Good Morning Britain episode. Sitting with co-host Adil Ray, they were joined by comic Paddy McGuinness, when Kate divulged her sentiments.

Discussing Paddy's upcoming show featuring ex-Top Gear companion Chris Harris, which involves road-tripping and facing midlife challenges, she expressed her keen interest stemming from personal considerations.

"You're working out how to grow old and where to retire," she said before revealing her own concerns: "Obviously this is very much in my remit and focus so I'm interested in what you would discover." Paddy went on to explain that the show had wider appeal than just to men, it was based on his and Chris' adventures.

The pair are set to embark on journeys through Sweden, Greece, and Switzerland in the new series, airing later this year. Paddy humorously remarked about their travels together: "I'm very much looking forward to getting back on the road with Chris Harris. Not so much looking forward to sharing a confined space with him. He doesn't believe in deodorant. On the plus side he'll give me something to laugh at along the way. Bring it on!"

Kate has previously opened up about her struggles following the loss of her husband Derek Draper, who died in January after a long health battle exacerbated by COVID-19. The Good Morning Britain presenter took a brief hiatus from the show but has since made a poignant return.

The mum-of-two previously discussed the challenges of caring for a loved one with guests who found love while supporting partners with dementia, reports the Mirror.

Reflecting on her own journey, Kate revealed: "This is something that I have been through a little bit. Derek did not have dementia but there was a sense after COVID he was absolutely the same person, still loved him as much but there was a change."

She continued, highlighting the emotional toll of adapting to changes in a loved one: "And with dementia, this doesn't happen overnight because it's something very slowly and the person caring for them has to learn how to love that person that they still love in a different way."

The nation shared in her sorrow when Kate announced Derek's passing online, expressing her grief: "I'm sad to have to tell you all that my darling husband Derek has passed away. As some of you may know he has been critically ill following a cardiac arrest in early December which, because of the damage inflicted by Covid in March 2020, led to further complications."

"Derek was surrounded by his family in his final days and I was by his side holding his hand throughout the last long hours and when he passed. I have so much more to say, and of course, I will do so in due course, but for now, I just want to thank all the medical teams who fought so hard to save him and to make his final moments as comfortable and dignified as possible. Sending so much love and thanks to all of you who have so generously given our family so much support."

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays at 6am on ITV.
