BBC Mastermind fans all have same complaint over 'horror' question in new series
One of the BBC's favourite quiz shows, Mastermind, has recently made a return. But it seems a "change" in the most recent episode of the new series has caused some upset among loyal fans.
Clive Myrie appeared at the helm of the show, as he welcomed on four new hopeful contestants on Monday evening (August 19). Each of them competed in their special topics, hoping that their wits were enough to help them be crowned the Mastermind champion.
Contestant Robin Dunford picked orchids of the British Isles as his specialist subject and Ramona McKnight chose American TV comedy Schitt's Creek. Meanwhile, player Joseph Gregg picked satirical songwriter Tom Lehrer and Maura Kenny opted for the Second World War intelligence plot Operation Mincemeat.
As always, host Clive quizzed each contestant with questions about their specialist subjects before each one had to return to face general knowledge brainteasers. But as Joseph headed into the next round, fans at home picked up on something infuriating and soon took to social media to complain.

Clive asked the player: "The horror film villain Freddy Krueger, who attacks his victims in their dreams, first appeared in what 1984 film?"

BBC Two welcomed four new players to Mastermind (Image: Mastermind)Joseph seemed to be flummoxed as he began to shake his head. Giving the question a guess, he eventually answered: "Kramer versus Kramer."
Clive corrected the contestant, saying: "No, A Nightmare on Elm Street." Depsite the tricky answer, Joseph had shot from bottom of the leaderboard to a respectable second place.
While some fans congratulated him on his decent play, others criticised the questions given and accused the show of "dumbing down" as opposed to previous series.

One user posted on X/Twitter as they fumed: "I honestly think this show has dumbed down considerably since the days of Magnus #Mastermind." And another echoed: "Anyone else think that the general knowledge questions on #mastermind tonight are quite easy?" (sic)
Someone else wrote: "I always think the young people on #Mastermind are just generally disadvantaged by the general knowledge round. The older I get the more 'easy' that round becomes."
Mastermind has been on the air for over 50 years, with Magnus Magnusson hosting the show from 1972 to 1997. Clive Myrie took over the role back in 2021, following in the footsteps of John Humphrys, Clive Anderson and Peter Snow.
