Outlander star lands role in gritty crime drama that's worlds away from Starz series

Outlander: Season 7 part 2 teaser for STARZ drama

Channel 5 has finally shared a first look at its brand new crime drama, Ellis, which stars Sharon D Clarke in the lead detective role. The show will also feature actors from huge shows, including Starz’s Outlander and BBC One’s Doctor Who.

The first look at the new series includes a number of new on-set images, as well as two snaps of the show’s leading star Clarke. The pictures show the actress in what seems to be a police station corridor, staring out of the window.

We also get our first look at Outlander actor Andrew Gower, who plays DS Harper in the drama. In the snaps, Gower can be seen leaning down over a dead body in the middle of a crime scene.

The images might not give too much away but, according to the Radio Times, the new show should bring Channel 5 to the grittier side of the detective genre. The official synopsis for Ellis describes her as "a tenacious cop who is parachuted into failing investigations".

It continues: "Each two-hour episode sees Ellis – accompanied by her right-hand man DS Harper – arrive at a different police station, where she will have to win over the local detectives and immerse herself in the cases she has come to solve.

"As a Black female cop, Ellis is used to being dismissed and overlooked, but she is a first-class murder detective, with a determination for justice and a deep well of compassion for those who need it."

Clarke is probably best known for her longstanding role as Lola Griffin in Holby City, but Doctor Who fans may also know her as Ryan's grandmother Grace.

Additionally, she has starred in Showtrial and Informer, as well as the popular romcom Red, White & Royal Blue.

Meanwhile, Gower, who plays Clarke’s professional partner on-screen, is best known for portraying Prince Charles Edward Stuart in Outlander, which he starred in for 11 episodes.

Fans might also recognise him from shows like Black Mirror, Carnival Row, Being Human and Netflix’s You.

There haven’t been any further casting announcements as of yet, but we know Ellis will be coming to the small screen this autumn.

Channel 5’s head of drama and deputy chief content officer Sebastian Cardwell said: "We're riding high on drama at Channel 5 and have an upcoming autumn schedule packed full of new series that our audience can get their teeth stuck into.

"With detective mysteries, gripping dramas, psychological thrillers and an incredible line-up of UK talent to bring the stories to life, there'll be something for everyone to enjoy."

Ellis will air on Channel 5 later this year.
