Bargain Hunt: Catherine Southon breaks blue team's bird scarer

Catherine Southon is best known for being an antiques expert on BBC shows like Bargain Hunt. She worked her way up from an administrative job to Head of Scientific and Maritime Works of Art at Sotheby's.

Specialising in scientific instruments and maritime works of art, she started working as an independent consultant. Her interest in antiques dates back to her university years and while studying for her Master's degree, she curated an exhibition on Rock 'n' Roll memorabilia.

As part of the exhibition she asked Hilary Kay from Sotheby’s and the Antiques Roadshow to come and give a talk. Inspired by her, Catherine decided she would launch her own career in the antiques world.

After graduating, Catherine applied for a job at Sotheby’s in the Collectors Department. She began answering the phones and filing, eventually becoming Head of Department.

She now runs her own saleroom in Croydon, Surrey. Here's everything you need to know about her personal life outside of work.

Catherine has always lived in Kent and it is her family and friends who have kept her in her home county.

Speaking to Great British Life she said: "My friends and family are all nearby, plus I love the fact that we’re so close to the capital, but with countryside just down the road.

"We’ll often head to Keston on a Saturday morning to walk the dog on the common, then to have a good breakfast afterwards at Daisy Grey café – it sets us up nicely for the weekend."

Catherine does have children, although their names are not known publicly. When asked what she liked doing in her free time, she told the BBC: "Any spare time I have, I like to spend with my children doing something fun."

Her Twitter bio says she is "mum to two not-so-little ones", so it appears her children have grown up.

As for whether she is married, Catherine has not divulged much about her relationship as she tends to keep her private life under wraps.

In 2012 she set up her own auction house, Catherine Southon Auctioneers & Valuers, which takes up most of her time.

She told Home and Antiques: "Doing talks in the local area, I was often asked, ‘Where’s the nearest auction room?’. As there wasn’t anything nearby, I decided to set up on my own.

"It's now grown from being just me to a staff of six. The auction house is my baby. I’m on it 24 hours a day, plus weekends, and I like to sell as much as I can on sale days, too. After all, it’s my name at the top."

Bargain Hunt airs on BBC One on weekdays at 12.15pm
