GMB: Kwasi Kwarteng discusses Labour's settlement with RMT

Good Morning Britain fans fumed as hosts Richard Madeley and Kate Garraway welcomed on an expert this morning (August 19). The presenting team introduced former Conservative Chancellor of the Exchequer, Kwasi Kwarteng, to the ITV show to discuss the latest move from the Labour party - But as he came on, viewers "switched off".

Mr Kwarteng was on the show to give his expert opinion after reports that the government is looking to amend a law that would mean trade unions could be free to strike even if most of their members do not vote for it. Giving his take on the situation, the former politician said: "The only explanation I could come up with is  they've got 5 years and they're trying to get everything controversial out at the beginning."

He added: "The problem is, as we're going into winter, it's August now, is that if you give big settlements to different unions that won't prevent industrial action. It could encourage people to say 'well if they got 10%, if I go on strike I might get 10% as well.'

"That's the danger. You get a domino effect. And you could well be in a situation where we are facing a lot of industrial action coming into the winter."

But as the former MP spoke about the country's finances, fans at home were livid. Taking to social media, mainly X/Twitter, they shared their thoughts on him giving his expert opinion.

A third fumed: "It really sticks in my throat when @GMB #GMB use Kwasi Kwarteng to discuss the news. He crashed the economy. Why do I want to hear his opinions."

Someone else threatened to "boycott" the ITV show, as they wrote: "Why on earth are you giving Kwasi Kwarteng air time? He was part of the team that caused millions of us into hardship with interest spikes.

"Incredibly distasteful to have him on @GMB. Time to boycott GMB until you stop using Kwasi!"

Mr Kwarteng lasted just 38 days in the role of Chancellor of the Exchequer under Liz Truss' Conservative government, but remained an official representative until May 30, 2024.

He left in 2022 after a mini-budget he produced resulted in financial turbulence and a revolt from his fellow Tory MPs. The mini-budget of September 2022 included £45bn of tax cuts and was followed by market turmoil.Mr Kwarteng's brief tenure as chancellor made him the second-shortest serving chancellor behind Iain Macleod, who died a month after taking office in 1970.Good Morning Britain airs weekdays from 6am on ITV and ITVX
