Micah Richards was left embarrassed on Sky Sports after fellow pundit Jamie Redknapp probed him on a lacklustre performance against Chelsea from his playing days. Ex-Manchester City star Richards was on Sky Sports' first Super Sunday show of the 2024/25 Premier League season ahead of his former side's visit to Chelsea - before swiftly asking if they could "move on".

Richards, Redknapp and ex-City and Chelsea striker Daniel Sturridge were providing their thoughts on the blockbuster fixture. They discussed the 3-0 Chelsea win over City at the beginning of the 2006/07 campaign, where a young Richards was deemed worthy of a starting role.

The now-beloved pundit was repeatedly tormented by Chelsea's left-winger Arjen Robben in that game. The trio of pundits were shown a clip of Chelsea's third goal where Robben played a through ball to Wayne Bridge, who steamed past Richards to set up Didier Drogba's spectacular header.

Redknapp in particular enjoyed the old footage of his colleague being skinned, as Richards laughed off the friendly jibes. Ex-Liverpool midfielder Redknapp persisted with his trolling, asking: "What would you say if you saw a player doing that now?"

Richards responded: "I'd say he got the positioning all wrong," resulting in more banter between the trio. As Redknapp continued rubbing salt in the wounds, Richards sheepishly joked: "Can we move on?"

The 2006/07 season was Richards' inaugural as a first-team starter for City, having broken through the previous campaign. The young full-back went through a baptism of fire against the reigning champions as John Terry gave the home side an early lead.

Frank Lampard scored a deflected strike from range on the 26th-minute mark after some stunning play by Michael Essien. And Drogba’s third in the 78th minute clinched an opening-day win over a 10-man City.

Eighteen years later, the same fixture at Stamford Bridge is set to offer another tantalising spectacle. On this occasion, four-time consecutive Premier League champions City are the favourites under the management of Pep Guardiola.

Chelsea are somewhat of an unknown quantity following the arrival of new manager Enzo Maresca from Leicester City, while concerns around their squad quality, adherence to Profit and Sustainability Rules and wild spending linger on.

Maresca said ahead of his first competitive fixture in charge of the Blues: "After eight or nine years together, you can do so many different things - Pep is not a manager that is always doing the same, he is always changing. For us, it will be exactly the same. It will be a tough game but exciting to start against the champions.

"We are going to try and do our best to win games. For me, this is my personal opinion, the big difference between us in this moment and teams that are dominating English football, it's just a matter of time.

"These clubs worked with the same manager for eight or nine years and here we have been one month. For sure, with timing, we are going to close the gap and hopefully, it can happen very soon."
