Letter: The apparently alarming cargo that trains carry through Salt Lake City raises safety concerns

As I waited for the train on 9th West the other day, it occurred to me that growing up on the west side I never thought much about what was being carried by all the trains we would hear day and night.

On that day, I watched tanker car after tanker car clearly labeled “liquid gas” and many others with a chilling “sulfuric acid” plainly marked on the side. Of course, those tankers were probably empty, seeing as how they were headed east into the heart of downtown and where City Creek now flows somewhere underground, right? The time to solve the train problem was yesterday, not tomorrow. Just ask the good people of East Palestine, Ohio.
