Amazon Prime cancels steamy fantasy drama My Lady Jane after just one season

My Lady Jane: Emily Bader stars in trailer for Prime Video series

In a shock move, Amazon Prime has axed the fantasy romance drama My Lady Jane after a solitary season, leaving fans reeling merely seven weeks following the release of its full eight-episode run.

Although My Lady Jane, the alternative-world fantasy spun from the creativity of authors Cynthia Hand, Brodi Ashton and Jodi Meadows, garnered positive critical acclaim, it was not enough to grant the show a reprieve.

Set in a 16th-century England adorned with magic, where humans mingle with shapeshifters capable of morphing into animals or other people, the show presented a rich tapestry for viewers.

Centring on Jane Grey, portrayed by Emily Bader, an ordinary human drawn into the plight of the persecuted shapeshifters, her ascending influence spells trouble for the powers that be, reports the Mirror.

Fans of the series will undoubtedly find their hearts heavy with its cancellation news, despite critics from The Guardian lauding it with a four-star rating and Forbes hailing it as "one of the best shows of 2024".

Variety dished out immense praise, stating: "This masterful retelling, which is bursting with delightful expletives, iconic one-liners and a whole array of death plots and schemes, unveils an alternative universe where women (and some men) have the agency to gain control of their lives."

The review added: "While My Lady Jane clearly labels itself as a fantasy-filled reimagining, its outlandishness makes it a standout."

The Standard labelled it as "rampantly horny", stating: "Brilliantly bonkers, the show thumbs its nose at history in favour of something much more entertaining."

On Rotten Tomatoes, the series has been certified fresh with a critic score of 94% and an audience score of 79%.

The star-studded cast includes Emily Bader, Edward Bluemel, Rob Brydon, Dominic Cooper, Anna Chancellor, Jordan Peters, Kate O'Flynn, Henry Ashton, Jim Broadbent and Ollie Chris, who provides the narration.

Despite critical acclaim, the series failed to make it into Nielsen's top 10 streaming charts in the month following its release, often a predictor of renewal.

The axing of My Lady Jane, created by Gemma Burgess, was first reported by Deadline.
