Hongkongers told to not panic about mpox outbreak

Hongkongers on Saturday were told not to panic about the more deadly and transmissible clade 1b strain of the mpox virus, but those belonging to the high-risk groups, should stay vigilant. The advice from infectious diseases expert Ivan Hung came after the World Health Organization on Wednesday declared the mpox outbreak in Africa a global health emergency - the highest level of alarm that can be issued by the world body. A total of 18,737 suspected or confirmed cases of mpox were reported in Africa since the beginning of the year, including 1,200 cases in a single week, the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention said. The hardest hit country, the Democratic Republic of Congo has reported 222 confirmed and 783 suspected cases, as well as 24 deaths in one week, the African union health agency noted. But Professor Hung told RTHK that the chance of the virus spreading to the SAR was very low. However, he urged those belonging to high-risk groups - such as sex workers, men who have sex with men, bisexuals, and laboratory workers - to get vaccinated and watch out for symptoms. They include a rash, a fever, coughing, and a stuffy nose. “But important, of course, is that you have to take extra precaution if you belong to the high-risk groups and also those who are immunocompromised, then of course you should be cautious and consider taking the vaccines,” he said. The University of Hong Kong professor also urged people to avoid travelling to high-risk areas in Africa, and not to touch wild animals so as to reduce the risk of catching the viral disease.
