BBC Breakfast: Emily Craig and Imogen Grant reflect on Olympic win

BBC Breakfast viewers revealed they had switched off over coverage of the Olympics. Charlie Stayt and Naga Munchetty hosted Saturday's instalment (August 17) and continued reporting on the 2024 Olympic Games, which concluded on August 11.

Charlie, 62, said: "It's been a week since the Olympic Games ended but we're still feeling somewhat of a buzz from all of the performances. Among Team GB's winners were Emily Craig and Imogen Grant, who won Olympic gold in the lightweight women's double sculls.

The duo dominated the event to win in a time of 6:47.06, over a second ahead of Romania (6:48.78) with Greece (6:49.28) in third. The athletes were welcomed onto the red sofa alongside Charlie and Naga and confessed they will "never get bored" of watching footage of their incredible win.

Later in the programme, the presenters were joined by Bryony Page, who made history with Team GB's first ever trampolining gymnastics gold medal at Paris 2024.

Of her history-making win, Bryony told the duo: "It was just amazing. I was just incredibly happy, a little bit relieved. Like all of the emotions that you could feel, just times it by so many. It was just the most incredible feeling."

While Charlie and Naga couldn't wait to find out more from members of Team GB, viewers flooded social media with complaints as they blasted the continued coverage of the Olympics.

One fumed: "#BBCBreakfast enough with the post Olympics coverage. Ridiculous. And now football is back and you really can’t help yourselves with overexcitable commentary. I have a headache now with all that shouting!!! I’m turning this rubbish off."

Another agreed: "Absolute overkill now with the frigging Olympics, my ears are ringing too." A third declared: "FFS the Olympics are over #bbcbreakfast."

Someone else said: "I've had more than enough of the Olympics, jesus wept." After speaking with Emily and Imogen, sports presenter Hugh Ferris issued an apology to Charlie and Naga.

The apology came as Charlie discussed with Emily and Imogen that they would "forever be the reigning champions" of their Olympic event. They then joked that it could be a pub quiz question one day.

As Hugh turned his attention to the latest sports news, Naga questioned whether his bulletin could top the 14 gold medals won by Team GB. He responded: "Yes, I can top that with one goal, the opening match of the Premier League season. How about that if it is about numbers?"

Naga jokingly shut her co-star down by saying: "You don't win today." Hugh admitted he had failed, adding: "I apologise to both of you and to Imogen and Emily as well."
