10 Highest-Grossing R-Rated Movies Of All Time

Big time

Deadpool & Wolverine is one of 2024's biggest success stories so far at the box office, and it's breaking records left and right. It has just passed 2019's Joker to become the No. 1 highest-grossing R-rated film of all time. Not bad for Deadpool's MCU debut!

With the film passing that billion-dollar threshold, we're rounding up all of the top 10 highest-grossing R-rated movies of all time. As you'll see in the gallery, the Deadpool franchise makes up three of the top five, with Joker and Oppenheimer accounting for the others.

Hugh Jackman shows up twice, thanks to Deadpool & Wolverine and Logan, but Reynolds tops him with three appearances on the list thanks to the Deadpool series.

Also of note is that Detective Chinatown 3 ($686 million) makes the cut, despite only releasing in China.

Read on to see the full list of the highest-grossing R-rated movies of all time, not adjusted for inflation. The list could change soon, too, as the highly anticipated Joker: Folie A Deux is coming this October and promises to be a big success, though whether or not it can match the first movie remains to be seen.

10. The Passion of the Christ (2004)

Worldwide box office: $612 million

Mel Gibson's 2004 biblical drama starring Jim Caviezel was a huge success at the box office and also earned multiple Academy Award nominations. It tells the story of the final days of Jesus and remains controversial in part for Gibson's involvement.

9. Logan (2017)

Worldwide box office: $619 million

Logan is regarded as one of the best comic book movies ever and was a major success at the box office as well. The R-rated film directed by James Mangold was hyper-violent and, by the end, everyone thought it would be Jackman's final outing as Wolverine. But Hollywood has a way of calling people back to roles, and Jackman eventually returned in Deadpool & Wolverine.

8. Detective Chinatown 3 (2021)

Worldwide box office: $686 million

A Chinese buddy comedy from director Chen Sicheng, Detective Chinatown 3 came out in 2021 and was a massive success right out of the gate. Its achievement is all the more impressive considering it was never released in the US.

7. It (2017)

Worldwide box office: $704 million

The latest film adaptation of the Stephen King book, It tells the story of a group of kids in small-town Maine who are terrorized by a clown (Bill Skarsgard) who plays off their individual fears.

6. The Matrix Reloaded (2003)

Worldwide box office: $742 million

The Matrix Reloaded, released in 2003, had big shoes to fill after the enormous success of 1999's The Matrix. Whether it lived up to expectations is a debate. However, it did bring back Keanu Reeves, Laurence Fishburne, Carrie-Anne Moss, and Hugo Weaving, while adding Jada Pinkett Smith.

5. Deadpool (2016)

Worldwide box office: $783 million

Ryan Reynolds wanted to make Deadpool for some time, but it wasn't until the test footage made its way online (Reynolds has since admitted he may have played a role) that 20th Century Fox gave it the greenlight. It proved to be a great idea, as Deadpool was a massive success and helped propel Reynolds to another level of stardom in a role some say he was born to play.

4. Deadpool 2 (2018)

Worldwide box office: $786 million

Two years after Deadpool, Reynolds got the band back together for a sequel that proved to be very popular. The main bad guy, Cable, was played by none other than Josh Brolin, who had a busy year in 2018--he also played the villain Thanos in Avengers: Infinity War.

3. Oppenheimer

Worldwide box office: $975.4 million

Christopher Nolan's World War II drama Oppenheimer tells the story of J. Robert Oppenheimer and the creation of the Atomic bomb. It's a heavy, somber movie that deals with intense subject matter. It was a successful creatively and commercially, and star Cillian Murphy earned an Academy Award for his portrayal of the title character.

2. Joker (2019)

Worldwide box office: $1.078 billion

2019's Joker is a divisive movie, but no one can disagree that it made a ton of money at the box office. Joaquin Phoenix plays Arthur Fleck, and the unsettling film documents his descent into unhinged, murderous, delusional behavior. Phoenix won an Oscar for Joker.

1. Deadpool & Wolverine (2024)

Worldwide box office: TBA

Ryan Reynolds announced that Deadpool & Wolverine is now the No. 1 highest-grossing R-rated movie but the official figure is not available yet. The film is a team-up with Hugh Jackman's Wolverine, and audiences loved it. It also officially bridges the X-Men movies and the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
