Gardeners' World expert Carol Klein has told green-fingered readers the perfect flower to grow if you want to cover up shady spots in your garden.

Writing in the September issue of BBC Gardeners' World magazine, Carol says it is the Japanese anemones that could solve the trick.

She wrote: "When writing about groups of plants, it is usually the summer-flowering beauties that ornament our beds and borders in open positions and full sun, but most of us have shady places in our gardens, crying out for interest and colour, especially at this time of year.

"Enter the Japanese anemones. Most 'Japanese' anemones are actually from China and have been grown in Japan for hundreds of years.

"They have been popular here since their introduction more than a century and a half ago. They are easy to grow, extremely accommodating and last indefinitely once they are established, making bigger and bigger clumps.

"They can be difficult to establish at first, but if you buy strong plants and enrich the site with homemade compost or an organic soil improver there should be no problems."

Gardening expert Carol, 79, updated her fans on her cancer recovery. She was diagnosed with breast cancer but underwent surgery in April.

She revealed that she had undergone a double mastectomy but while presenting at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show for the BBC, Carol joyfully announced that she has been given the all-clear.

"It's been quite a challenging year. I was diagnosed with breast cancer, and I had a double mastectomy." She added: "I'm now cancer-free."

The Gardeners' World star was flooded with messages of support as one social media user penned: "Wonderful news Carol. It was so good to see you at Chelsea. Having treatment myself and you don't know how inspiring it is to see public figures talk about it."

Another commented: "Lots of love and get back to full strength soon - To the future!"

A third added: "Great to see you looking so well. That’s great news Carol."

Speaking about her diagnosis in May, the TV star bravely told fans: "Hello everyone, isn't it marvellous to see the sun out at last! I just wanted to get in touch with you and keep you up to date with what has been happening to me recently.

"A few weeks ago I was referred to the breast care clinic at my local hospital and after tests I was diagnosed with breast cancer. Having consulted with my family and all the doctors, it was decided that I'd have a double mastectomy and that was carried out on April 3."
