HK Paralympic athletes set their sights on Paris

Hong Kong athletes heading to the upcoming Paralympic Games have set new goals for themselves. The SAR will send 23 athletes to Paris, competing in eight sports, including archery, boccia and wheelchair fencing. Badminton star Daniel Chan will compete in the men’s singles, and hopes for a better result than in the 2020 Tokyo Paralympics. “I would like to finish all my competitions in a healthy way, because there are too many injuries through the years. And a medal would be another thing. In the last Paralympics, I got a bronze medal. I would like to change the colour of the medal,” he said. The 39-year-old will also retire after this year’s Paralympics, and said he would miss the court and the memories. “I wish I could enjoy every moment during the Paralympics and try to write down and keep all the memories,” Chan said. Meanwhile, boccia athlete Ho Yuen-kei will play in the women’s individual and mixed pairs events in Paris. She said she has high hopes as she’s an “experienced” athlete. “Last time in Tokyo, we [ranked] fourth, just a little bit [off from getting] a medal. So what our target is that we want to try our best and get the medal [for] Hong Kong,” Ho said. Swimmer Ng Cheuk-yan secured a ticket to the Paralympics after she broke the 200m breaststroke world record at the Citi Para Swimming World Series last year. The 14-year-old first-time Paralympian will participate in three events, and she said she will do her best and enjoy the competition.
