This Friday (August 16) also marks the punk icons’ first appearance at the iconic East Village dive bar CBGBs. 50 years later, it has been announced that NYC Ferry will host themed commutes on Friday and Saturday (August 17) from Wall St / Pier 11, Sunset Park, and Rockaway at select rides during the afternoon.

“New York City’s punk music scene took form as Queens-born band Ramones played their first show at CBGB,” they wrote on their website. “Soon after, hits like ‘Rockaway Beach’ and ‘Blitzkreig Bop’ brought these Forest Hills-born rockers to the mainstream, and the rest– as they say– is history.

“To celebrate this 50-year milestone of New York Punk, Rhino Entertainment & Warner Music Group are partnering with NYC Ferry for a series of onboard advertisements to promote Spotify’s This Is Ramones Playlist, plus three Ramones-themed ferry rides to Rockaway Beach!”

The rides will also feature an exclusive ‘50 Years of Ramones’ sticker for riders, footage of the band shown on the ferry’s screens, free samples of locally owned Rockaway Soda, and a raffle for an exclusive Ramones prize pack courtesy of Rhino Records.

Riders can expect to hear ‘Rockaway Beach’ from 1977’s ‘Rocket To Russia’ blasted as the vessel leaves Pier 11. The website also notes that once travellers reach the Rockaways, the Rockaway Beach Bakery will have limited edition ‘Ra-scones’ and ‘Now I Wanna Sip Some (Cold) Brew’ available.

“We’ve been bringing a lot of folks out to the beach this summer, and these local partnerships are important to get people going to the Rockaways to connect with the neighbourhoods there,” said NYC Ferry’s Executive Director James Wong (via Gothamist).

The NYC Ferry advised on Instagram that it operates on a first-come, first-serve basis. “Activating a ticket does not guarantee entry onboard,” they wrote on Instagram.

Earlier this year, Johnny Ramone’s estate sued Mickey Leigh over an upcoming biopic about Joey Ramone entitled I Slept With Joey Ramone, starring Pete Davidson.

Joey Ramone’s brother then counter-sued the widow of Johnny Ramone, calling her attempts to shut down the Netflix biopic “baseless and flimsy”.
