Police arrest tram driver for dangerous driving

Police said they arrested the driver of a tram involved in a fatal crash that killed a three-year-old girl in Western District on Thursday morning. The tram was travelling along the eastbound track of Praya, Kennedy Town at 10.40am, officers said. But when it approached the pedestrian crossing near Des Voeux Road West, it reportedly knocked down four people who were crossing the road. A three-year-old girl was trapped under the tram and was rushed to Queen Mary Hospital in an unconscious state. She was certified dead at about 12.30pm. A six-year-old girl, a 34-year-old woman and a 66-year-old man also sustained injuries and were sent to the same hospital. Police said they arrested the 48-year-old male driver on suspicion of dangerous driving causing death and that he is currently being detained. For their part, Hong Kong Tramways said that according to their preliminary understanding, the tram was operating as usual when the accident happened. It added that they suspended the driver after the incident. The Transport Department said it is very concerned about the incident and that it has asked the tramway operator to investigate it in detail and submit a report as soon as possible.
