ITV Coronation Street cult leader Rowan's downfall 'sealed' after glaring mistake

Corrie: Leanne and Toyah argue about Rowan

Coronation Street aired a surprise twist for Rowan Cunliffe on Wednesday (August 14) as Nick Tilsley rumbled his blackmail plot. Over the past few months, Leanne Battersby has been neglecting her partner Nick as she spends time with Rowan's "self-improvement group" The Institute.

As Leanne obsessed over Rowan's cult, Nick developed romantic feelings for her sister Toyah with the pair sleeping together.

But Rowan managed to get a photo of the two kissing and has been using the evidence to try and squeeze money from Nick and blackmailing him into investing in The Institute.

Earlier this week, Nick confided in brother David Platt that he'd finally decided whether he wanted to be with Toyah or her sister Leanne following weeks of indecision and he was ready to follow his feelings.

Meanwhile, it appeared Leanne was finally breaking away from The Institute after ignoring Rowan's demands to visit her sister Toyah at the hospital following her operation for ovarian cancer.

When Nick was alone with Toyah, he confessed that he was in love with her and wanted to be with her. However, Toyah suggested they ignore their feelings to save Leanne from The Institute.

In a twist, Nick later received a voice message from Rowan demanding a £20k investment by midnight, or he will tell Leanne about his affair with Toyah. But his plan failed when Nick played the message to Toyah and they planned to take him down.

Nick warned Rowan that he would report him to the police for extortion and, following his previous criminal activity, he would be in trouble. He also vowed to not hand over any money to The Institute.

"This voicemail proves you're trying to extort me," Nick exclaimed before adding: "Leanne is exactly where she belongs and that's with me."

Rowan was rattled by Nick’s threat and launched a new plan to get Leanne back under the grips of the cult.

Once he heard Leanne was going to a family day with Nick, he offered her a special counselling session with The Institute's co-leader Willow.

Nick was disappointed as Leanne chose to attend this Institute meeting rather than spend time with his family. But will Leanne wise up to Rowan? And will Nick report him to the police?

Corrie fans are convinced that Rowan's voicemail will destroy his scam. Taking to X, one viewer wrote: "Rowan is falling right into the trap."
