Truck driver crashed into house after downing Buckfast and snorting 11g of cocaine

A truck driver caused more than £23,000 worth of structural damage smashing into a house after downing a huge quantity of alcohol and cocaine.

Ross Boag cracked the house wall from top to bottom after downing two bottles of Buckfast, a bottle of Mad Dog and snorting 11 grams of cocaine.

Boag – who admitted having the equivalent of 33 units of alcohol – shunted the tipper lorry so hard into another vehicle that it flew into the family home.

The 24-year-old – who also admitted hiring an excavator and tools and selling them on for drug money – was jailed for 14 months at Perth Sheriff Court this week and banned from driving for two years.

Sheriff Lindsay Foulis said: ‘One might be tempted to say that by taking two bottles of Buckfast, a bottle of Mad Dog and 11 grams of cocaine your recollection of what happened might be somewhat hazy.

‘The dangerous driving is a significant matter and one can only estimate the speed at which you were going in light of the damage which was caused. You must have been going at some speed.

‘You struck a vehicle, causing that vehicle to strike the property. He hits one car, then hits another with such force that it strikes the property with such force that it causes a crack to the wall and window frame.

‘It ploughs into the property and causes at least £23,000 worth of damage. He must have been travelling at very high speed for that amount of damage to be caused.’

Boag, from Perth, admitted driving dangerously and at speed before hitting a Volkswagen Transporter and shunting it into a Volvo V40 on 14 January last year.

The V40 hit the house in Elmgrove, Scone, so hard that the residents were woken up and a full-length crack was left after Boag drove off and departed the scene of the crash.

Solicitor Mark Robins, defending, said: ‘It was a tipper truck so it is a large vehicle. He said a security light came on and he got spooked and collided with a vehicle in the driveway.

‘He went off track and ended up driving into a ditch. He had to try and reverse out so he was at speed when he hit the other vehicle and shunted it into the property.

‘He was trying to get out of the ditch at excessive speed. He reversed and hit the vehicle which then hit the house.’

Fiscal depute Stuart Hamilton told the court: ‘At 12.40 am there was a loud bang. Witnesses could see the security light activated and they looked out the window to see a vehicle reversing at speed.

‘It caused the complainer’s vehicle to be pushed into the wall causing a crack to the wall and window frame. The accused’s vehicle was observed to exit and speed off.

‘Other witnesses observed the incident. CCTV was reviewed and captured the incident. The accused was traced through an insurance check. He denied being involved.

‘The property was no longer wind and watertight and there was an extensive crack running up to the roof. Their vehicle had extensive damage to the bumper, headlights, grill and panels.’

Boag also admitted stealing more than £1,000 worth of heavy plant equipment in November 2022, and an excavator worth more than £15,000 the following month.

The court was told that Boag initially rented the equipment and vehicle to use them on his farm job, but later decided to sell them on for £2,900 to spend on drugs.
