A Very Royal Scandal, which will explore the events around Prince Andrew’s memorable Newsnight interview, is coming to Amazon Prime. The drama, which will star Michael Sheen and Ruth Wilson, will examine the BBC interview from an alternative angle to Netflix’s Scoop, which came out on April 5, 2024.

Today, Amazon announced a release date for their three-part series dramatising Emily Maitlis’ iconic interview with Prince Andrew on BBC Two. Prime Video also shared some first-look images, which showed Ruth and Michael looking totally unrecognisable.

All three episodes of A Very Royal Scandal are set to premiere on September 19 exclusively on Amazon Prime Video. The retelling is set to “demonstrate the power of journalism through a pivotal moment in British history”.

Along with Ruth and Michael playing Emily and Prince Andrew, the show will also star Joanna Scanlan (After Love, Notes on a Scandal) as Amanda Thirsk, Alex Jennings (Your Christmas or Mine?) as Sir Edward Young, Éanna Hardwicke (The Sixth Commandment) as Stewart Maclean and Claire Rushbrook (Secrets & Lies) as Sarah Ferguson.

The series was directed by Julian Jarrold and written by Jeremy Brock, while Emily serves as an executive producer alongside Julian, Jeremy, Karen Thrussell, Graham Broadbent, Pete Czernin and Diarmuid McKeown. Notably missing from the top-billed line-up is the character of Sam McAlister, whose perspective was crucial to Netflix’s Scoop.

Sam, who claims to have been instrumental in securing the interview with Prince Andrew, was portrayed by Billie Piper in Scoop.

Additionally, Rufus Sewell appeared as Prince Andrew, while Gillian Anderson acted as Emily.

Meanwhile, according to IMDB, Clare Calbraith will play Sam in Amazon Prime’s take on the scandal.

The series will depict Emily’s headline-making Newsnight interview with the disgraced royal over his friendship with paedophile financier Jeffrey Epstein.

A Very Royal Scandal is the latest in Amazon’s ‘Scandal’ series, which it has previously co-produced with the BBC.

However, unlike with A Very British Scandal and A Very English Scandal, the BBC is not involved with the Prince Andrew project.

A Very Royal Scandal will be available to stream from September 19 exclusively on Amazon Prime Video.
