Poor skipping meals because of food costs: NGO

People on low-incomes in Hong Kong are struggling to afford nutritious food and some are having to skip meals altogether due to rising prices, an NGO said on Tuesday. Food Grace said it carried out a survey involving more than 500 underprivileged people in Kwai Tsing and Sham Shui Po, finding that a third had cut back on the number of meals they ate due to financial difficulties. Almost half of the respondents said that to save money, they either opted for less healthy food or went hungry on occasions. The NGO described the situation as worrying and urged the government to provide food subsidies to those in need. Angela Lo, project manager with the group, said better education on healthy eating would benefit many people who need to cook on a limited budget.
