The Simpsons to undergo huge change for Christmas for the first time in over 30 years

The Simpsons: Lisa kills Sideshow Bob

The Simpsons is producing four new episodes exclusively for Disney+ this year in a huge first for the iconic comedy.

This marks the first time in more than three decades that the series has premiered new episodes somewhere other than the Fox network.

Although the adventures of the beloved dysfunctional family have aired around the world elsewhere, including Channel 4 and Sky in the UK, the series has never produced new full-length episodes exclusively for a streaming platform.

The upcoming instalments will join a number of shorts already produced for the service since Disney bought Fox in 2019.

Executive producers for the series revealed the exciting update at this year’s D23 expo.

The four new episodes will include a Christmas two-parter titled O Come All Ye Faithful.

It will celebrate a whopping 35 years of The Simpsons being on air and will be released on December 17, in time with the show’s first-ever episode, another Christmas outing called Simpsons Roasting Over An Open Fire.

Two more episodes are titled The Past and the Furious and Yellow Planet will air in the “months ahead”.

Plus, Disney+ subscribers also have another Halloween-themed short to look forward to this October.

The last shorts produced for the platform were two Star Wars-themed shorts titled Rogue Not Quite One last year and this year’s May the 12th Be with You.

However, this will mark the first full-length episodes produced for Disney+ which may raise questions for the show’s future on Fox.

Notably, another popular animated comedy on the network, Family Guy, is producing original Hulu episodes, including a Halloween special starring Hollywood A-lister Glen Powell.

Could Disney be testing out a new home for their iconic cartoon families? Time - and the reception to these streaming exclusives - will tell.

The first episode of The Simpsons’ 36th season is intriguingly titled Bart’s Birthday and will see the iconic young rebel turning 10 - despite the fact he’s been that age for the past 35 years.

A synopsis reads: “Bart celebrates the most shocking birthday party of his entire life — one that might just change everyone in Springfield forever.”

The Simpsons season 36 premieres Sunday, September 29 on Fox and is available to stream on Disney+.
