Intel Has Designed a Chip to Power In-Car Video Games

Intel has announced that it’s built its first GPU for cars. The news was revealed at the company’s recent AI Cockpit Innovation Experience event in Shenzen, China.

Technically, the chip is a discrete graphics processing unit (dGPU) meaning it comes separate from the CPU chip and is predominantly geared towards powering quality graphics in games, which is exactly what Intel has in mind.

The Intel chip is being called the “Intel Arc Graphics for Automotive,” billed as being capable of running “high-demand AAA gaming titles.” The chips are packed with voice and facial recognition for what Intel is calling its AI cockpit experiences, for instance, controlling the car using voice commands.

Intel plans for cars containing the dGPU to go on sale beginning next year. Vehicles will come with physical hardware to bolster the chip the, turning the “vehicle into a mobile office and entertainment hub with immersive 4K displays, multiscreen setups and advanced 3D interfaces.”

The company is working with over 100 software vendors and says its already made 500 different apps and tools to build out its AI offerings.
