Paris Olympics: Kevin Durant says Simone Biles inspired him to 'keep tweeting,' clapping back at negativity

Simone Biles has made a lot of fans at these Paris Olympics. But Kevin Durant, while being predictably wowed by the decorated gymnast's elevation and determination, is a supporter for another reason, too.

The basketball superstar is no stranger to off-court social media derision, and has earned attention because he's an athlete who doesn't shy away from engaging with -- and clapping back at -- those who come at him with what he perceives as negativity.

And he's championing the cause of Biles, who took to Instagram last week to seemingly deflect shade thrown at the U.S. gymnastics team by former medalist MyKayla Skinner, and had to deal with even more coming at her individually following her withdrawal from the Tokyo Olympics in 2021 to deal with mental health issues.

She's the most prolific U.S. gymnast of all time. But, to Durant, she's exponentially stronger because she refuses to back down when challenged off the mats.

"When people see so much potential in you at an early age, you're gonna get nitpicked like that, and she's been through it at the highest of highest levels," Durant told The Athletic. "For her to continue to come out and showcase the brilliance every day, and also let people know that they sound crazy talking against her? To be able to do both is inspiring."

And, lest you think the dissension will rankle Durant's posting habit, think again.

"So yeah," he said. "She's inspired me to keep tweeting and keep doing what I do on the court too."
