Mikel Arteta reportedly hired a team of professional pickpockets to target his Arsenal players with the aim of teaching them an important lesson. The Spaniard has been known to make use of some unusual coaching methods but his latest trick might just be the most surprising of the lot.

At a dinner with his players, Arteta hired a team of pickpockets and tasked them with pinching valuables from members of his first-team squad, according to The Athletic. It is said that several players discovered they were missing phones and wallets after being asked to check their pockets at the end of the meal.

The aim of the exercise was to underline the importance of staying alert at all times, even in situations when his players might feel comfortable letting their guard down. Arteta will be hoping for his innovative methods to have the desired impact, with Arsenal hoping to finally beat Manchester City in next season's Premier League title race.

Arteta has made a point of trying to improve the mentality of his squad by employing a series of unusual tactics. He previously forced his players to train with You'll Never Walk Alone blaring through speakers in the background ahead of an away trip to Liverpool.

function loadOvpScript(){let el=document.createElement('script');el.setAttribute('src','https://live.primis.tech/live/liveView.php?s=114291&vp_content=plembed3e7arguyxmsj&cbuster=%%CACHEBUSTER%%&playerApiId=v114291');document.getElementById('ovp-primis').appendChild(el)} window.top.addEventListener('primisPlayerInit',e=>{try{if(e.detail&&e.detail.playerApiId==="v114291"){if(window.document.getElementsByClassName('jwplayer')[0]){e.detail.float('disable')}}}catch(e){}});window.addEventListener('DOMContentLoaded',()=>{setTimeout(()=>{if(typeof flagTcfLoaded!=='undefined'&&flagTcfLoaded===!0){loadOvpScript() ExpressApp.Log('[Load] OVP flagTcfLoaded',new Date())}else{document.addEventListener("tcfLoaded",()=>{loadOvpScript() ExpressApp.Log('[Load] OVP tcfLoaded',new Date())})}},1500)})

The Arsenal boss has also been known to bring an olive tree into meetings and was filmed using a light bulb in a team talk during the All or Nothing documentary. He even adopted a labrador named Win, who spends most of her time at the club's training ground but occasionally goes home with Arteta.

It remains to be seen if his strange coaching methods will help Arsenal in their bid to secure Premier League glory for the first time in over two decades. In a recent interview with the club's official channels, Arteta spoke of his desire to leave no stone unturned in his pursuit of greatness.

"We know the demands in the league and the competition we are facing," he said. "All of the work we’re doing is to find ways to get better and to see where the margins can be for our improvement.

"That pain [from last season] is still there and I think it has to remain there. But after analysing the whole season with all the staff, the team has done a lot and probably in any other context we would have won the Premier League and that’s a big jump, but it’s not enough.

"When you look at our academy and women’s performances and men’s first team, the environment that we have created and our supporters, it’s different. It’s a different hunger and it’s a different look. We’re really showing our teeth because we want to win.

"We know that if we want to achieve that in a consistent way and put the club in the position that we want, that’s going to be key. First of all, it’s about believing. We have to believe that we are good enough to do it and I feel that belief and the club is really hungry and we want more."
